I am trying to locate any relatives who may have further information or photographs of the family of my Grandfather George Stewart. He was born at 40 Commerce Street, Lossiemouth on 25 April 1887. I believe his brothers and sisters were William, John, Annie, Robert, James, Isabella. Their parents were William Stewart born 1856 ElginMoray and Isabella Smith born 1855 Mid Street, Fraserburgh. My Grandfather George emigrated to Australia in 1913 and married my Grandmother in 1920. I believe he, and one of my Grandmothers brothers, George Macdonald, visited Lossiemouth between 1916 and 1918 during leave from the Army in WW1. On some postcards, mention is made of returning home to 36 Commerce Street and in other papers, 39 Commerce Street is mentioned. Possibly other Stewart relatives also lived in these houses. I believe George was a carpenter and worked on some buildings in Lossiemouth, however I believe his father or grandfather may have been fishermen, as was Isabella Smiths family. Her father was William Smith and mother also Isabella Smith. My Grandfather married my Grandmother in Australia on his return from WW1 service. Any help would be greatly appreciated as George Stewart died when my Father was 4, and my brothers and I would love to know more about our Scottish background. Thank you Anne Stewart.

Although my mothers family name MURISON is from Gamrie and Alvah in what used to be the County of Banff, the GARROW family of Dufftown, Moray married into the family in a big way in the mid 1800s. The marriage of James Garrow and Margaret BOOTH begat Isabella, who married my great great uncle James Murison and then emigrated to Elgin County, Ontario, Canada in c1871. Her brother, William married Jane Keith and their sons married into the same Murison family. Isabellas sister, Margaret, married Francis Murison, my great grandfather. I would be happy to exchange information on these two families if anyone is interested.

Hi everyone and a Happy New Year 2013 to one and all. I wonder if anyone knows the Thomson family descendants of Elsie and Alexander George. Possibly in Aberlour Elsie was my deceased fathers mother but gave him to her sister Lily to care for. Also does anyone know what is now on the site of the Blacksboat Sawmill, Knockando where my father was born. p.s. Reid was the name of the sisters Elsie and Lily. Elsie and Lilys mother was a McLennan before she became a Reid. Her name was also Elsie. Lily married a Duff and has surviving relatives and I am hoping not to upset anyone searching for my ancestry.

My Great Grandmother Mary Hatton Drew was born in Cullen and it appears her parents Joseph Drew and Jane Drew nee Munro were also locals. I may even have come up with Josephs parents now thanks to this site. How I long to be back in the motherland doing this research in person and seeing where some of my heritage lies. Thank you x

I would just like to thank you and give praise for those who have adminstered and set up this site. I have just started out on putting together my family tree and I would like to say your site has given me the boost and the encouragement to get my tree off the ground, and with it not costing me anything for the information obtained. I now have the tools and knowledge to take this family research further, and its sad to say, it will now start costing me money, but at least it is less than I would have spent. Once again, great site and thank you very much.

I am searching for information on the Howisons in Moray. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks to MBGRG and to this site I have obtained valuable information on Archibald Howison, b1803 d1874 Knockando, his wife Margaret, nee Nicoll, b1799 d1871 Dallas and some of their children. It appears that Archibald Howison was a gamekeeper and that his son John, b1843 d1885, died at Knockando House. I have not yet established what importance Knockando House had at that time. Nor do I have much other information about their respective lives. Perhaps there exists some historical document on Moray, Dallas or Knockando which would help me. Any suggestions welcome.

This is a great site. Not many places where you can get such a concentration of local knowledge. Perhaps we could use the guestbook as more of a discussion board though.

Fantastic site, I was given the link by a member of Talking Scotland and have spent hours so far collecting information. Thanks again for all the hard work I know it takes to collect and display in such a clear and easy to use way.

We visited the Elgin Centre, family graves, and finally the website. Very useful and the help of the staff at Elgin much appreciated. We have returned various details to Elgin to increase the records, we hope most visitors will do the same, to help one of the most usefull Local Family History sites we have seen, to develop further. Lawrence and Lynn Fowler Fowler, researching Fowler families around Findhorn 1700 onwards.

A great site. I have added greatly to the information already obtained from scotlandspeople. I would very much like to get in touch with whoever supplied LIBINDX with the information on the children of Margaret Mary MacDonald of Rafford and William Laing of Edinkillie, presumably after they emigrated to Canada. MMMacD is my great Aunt.

Very good resource for all . No matter whether you are researching family tree, or local history , it gives you an excellent starting point . The site gives you details of the items you are looking for so that you can find them a lot easier in the microfilms rather than having to do all of the research in the , library you can get half of it done from home . Well done to Graeme, Margaret and co.

The site is an exceptional resource of immense value to those investigating ancestors and also those interested in the historical context of Moray in the past. We have just returned from Moray and were able to spend two days researching in the Heritage Centre. The LIBINDX online allowed us to do thorough preparation beforehand and so have come away with really useful results. Many thanks to Graham and to Margaret for their friendly help and guidance. They have a wealth of background knowledge and experience in the field that is unparalleled. Very many thanks.

This is a great site for anyone with Moray or Banffshire connections. It looks good and is easy to use. What work it must have taken to enter all the data. Congratulations to all concerned.

I can only echo the wonderful comments of others. The project must have been an impressive undertaking. Well done! We, who search our ancestors details, can only thank you again and again.

Well done! I have spent most of the day browsing the site and using the information obtained to fill in gaps and clear up some mysteries. It must have been a tremendous undertaking to bring this facility to fruition. Is there a way in which additional information could be provided and added to the site or, if an error/omission is noticed to draw attention to it to enable it to be corrected? In asking this I am not being critical of the work done but in a project this size it would be impossible to ensure it was 100% accurate.
I am looking forward to using it over the weeks and months ahead and only wish other authorities would make the same effort to put their archive material online for all to access. Once again WELL DONE.

Concratulations to Graeme and "ALL" his assistants for the work and effort placing the Libindx System on the Moray website.
I am particularly thrilled at the choice of the photograph that in the opening view. Not only do I remember seeing the Steam Lorries in the years prior to WWII, the farm where I was born is also included in the photo behind the smoke of the second lorry.
Good luck to all those who are researching their ancestry - I certainly appreciate all the assistance I have received.
Sincerely - George Watt

Thankyou so much.

My sister and I visited Grant Lodge in Nov 2001 and received such wonderful help from the staff. We were able to find information about our BRODIE family and now have the resource to do additional research. Thank you for all the work you have done to put this site out for our use.
Scotland - 26 February 2005 22:30:31
Excellent site, user-friendly searching, lots of details. I can echo some of the earlier comments, I was able to find two additional siblings of my great great grandmother Margaret Mitchell McQueen, names which are on her sampler and confirm 99.99% in our minds that we have the correct family. Margaret emigrated to the US and died in 1886 in Connecticut, and your site helps us find these important connections.

Fantastic. At last. Thank you Graham and your staff at the library. We in the colonies appreciate your kindness as we try to link back to our past. How can we access the newspaper references? Will SKS do a lookup? Terrific work. Easy to use and find details.
Thanks again, Dubh & Ei

WOW,,, what a wonderful site. Thank you to Anne Burgess for the link to this site. I went to look never thinking that I would actually find anyone on my family that I am trying to trace, but I was very happily surprised to find MY line of the FRASER family. I found James Fraser and his wife Janet Ritchie, then looking furthur found Janet's family too. It was wonderful to see. James & Janet came to Australia and settled with their family here. The most exciting thing to read was that there was a "complaint against him in 1858 from dropping dung upon the street". Little things like that help to really make a family story up and not just names and dates. Again thank you for a WONDERFUL site, I will be back many more times to keep looking.
England - 25 February 2005 18:44:48
Congratulations. I hope to use this site often during my research. Thanks to Anne Burgess for sending me the link.
